Stone Town is the capital city of Zanzibar. Most of the buildings in town are made out of stone, that is how this city got its name. When building this town it was unique to use stones for the constructions, especially in Africa. This is the most happening place of Zanzibar. You will find big markets, Tourist Information and many shops and restaurants. This makes it a great place to walk around, especially through the labyrinth the many small streets form. A great place to taste some seafood is Forodhani Gardens. Every evening people light their barbeques and you choose fresh seafood which they will prepare for you on the spot for little money. You can also taste some of the delicious local food like Zanzibar pizza and drink freshly pressed sugarcane juice.
There are many cultural activities in town. You can visit the Zanzibar Cultural Centre, a building that stands out because of its interesting architecture and color. It used to be one of the palaces of the sultan. Today it is a centre for all kinds of cultural organizations. On the same road you will find the Palace Museum. In this museum you will find a whole room dedicated to princess Salme of Zanzibar. She wrote Memoirs of an Arabian Princess, from which we learn many interesting details about life at court and the events of the time. You will get a good impression of the luxurious lifestyle of the sultan families. At the Arabic Fort you find many great souvenirs and it this is one of the best places on Zanzibar to get a henna decoration on your body. To get an idea of the old crafts you should visit the National Museum of Zanzibar.
Zanzibar is also known for its many spices. During a half day Spice Tour you will learn and taste many of Zanzibari spices, followed by a local lunch. These are just some of the places you can visit during your stay. From Stone Town it is about an hour drive to most beach accommodations on the island. The airport is only 15 minutes away.
