With its 5895 meter is this the highest mountain of entire Africa. It is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Hans Meyer is credited with being the first European to reach the summit in 1889. He climbed the mountain together with professional mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller and lead guide Johannes Kinyala Lauwo. Lauwo was a Marangu army scout from the Chagga tribe. He had climbed Kilimanjaro nine times before realising there was a crater. The mountain has three craters, Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo. The last one has the highest point called Uhuru peak. Shira is now known as Shira plateau because the volcano collapsed 500,000 years ago. Climbing Mawenzi is dangerous and impossible because of rock fall. The great thing about trekking up to the highest point is that you don’t have to be an experienced mountain climber, you don’t need ropes or technical climbing experience but you can walk up to the peak. There are different routes you can take:
If you are going to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro a guide and assistant guide will help you to reach the top. Porters will carry your luggage, equipments and food up the mountain. Depending on the size of your group the number of porters and guides will vary. We only use high quality camping equipments.
